Enclosed or open frame: it depends on the plastic

Updated

If you will print PLA and PETG, an open frame printer is fine. If you want ABS or ASA, buy an enclosed printer and still plan ventilation. Bambu Lab's own FAQ says its open frame A1 is not recommended for ABS and ASA unless the room is well ventilated and people keep a safe distance.

What each plastic asks for

PlasticOpen frameWhat the maker pages say
PLAYesPrusa calls it one of the easiest materials, suitable for beginners, and not prone to significant warping. Nozzle 210 to 215 C, bed 60 C.
PETGYesListed as an ideal filament on every Bambu Lab printer here, open or enclosed.
TPU (flexible)Yes, but go slowPrusa says flexible materials suit mostly advanced users. The Ender 3 V3 SE listing names TPU 95A.
ABS and ASANot advisedBambu Lab: they release harmful gases such as styrene, which may cause dizziness or nausea. Print in an enclosed chamber in a well-ventilated area, or add filtration or exhaust. Prusa: ABS warps a lot and gives off toxic fumes.

Why ABS wants a box

ABS shrinks as it cools. On an open printer the room air cools the part unevenly and the corners lift. Bambu Lab's A1 FAQ ties this to the open frame and lower chamber temperature: weaker layers and bigger warping on large models. Prusa gives ABS a bed of about 100 C and warns against drafts around the print, even while you ventilate the room.

An enclosure is not ventilation

The box keeps heat in. It does not make the fumes go away. Bambu Lab's guide still says to run the printer in a well-ventilated area or add air filtration or an exhaust system, and to wear a vapor mask for long jobs. NIOSH found ventilation to be an important control for 3D printer emissions. See the ventilation and fire safety guide.

My picks

Follow the maker's safety instructions for your printer. Keep it away from anything that burns, ventilate the room, and stay nearby while it prints. This is general information, not safety or health advice.
